This isn't a
"recommendation" page. This is a favorites page. Why the
distinction? Because recommendations can imply a judgement on
writing quality, while
this is just an eclectic list of stories I like.
I have
personal reasons for my choices. Sometimes, I list a story for
the
writing quality, or for its originality, but I may recommend it just
because it made me laugh. Also, so far as I know, this is the
only page of recommendations out there specifically for Scott
and/or
Jean. Most stories below, even if ostensibly about others,
have Scott or Jean as important figures.
Finally,
there are many stories out there that
I've liked -- even liked quite a bit
-- that aren't on this page. If
you look here and don't find your fiction, please don't take
it personally. This is a quirky list. Broadly
categorized, and alphabatized by the first title listed.
The stories below may contain ADULT material; many of them
will, in fact. (C) means comicverse, (M/M2) means movieverse, and
(C-UX) means Ultimate X-Men. I've favored linked to the
author's site, if possible, and to an index page rather than the
specific story -- that way you can find more by him/her if you liked
the work.
(Because
the Hildebrandt painting above is so beautiful, I hate to
reduce it; you can click on the image to see it
full size. Thanks to Rivka
for letting me use it. And Lelia got me the "Scuzy Cyclops" and
"Henry Reading" below.)

SCOTT & JEAN (both are
about equally represented)
"Autumn"
& "The
Photograph" by Quidam (M) -- The first is a lovely and lyric
double point-of-view piece the celebrates Scott and Jean as a pair,
post X2, and the second is a post X2 piece concentrating mostly on how
Scott sees Jean. (Read her Jubilee stories, too, while you're
there.)
"The
Bet,"
& "One
Breath" by Shalnyx (M) -- Shana is
probably best known for the Perfect
Ring of
Scars series, but I
think I like these better. "The Bet" is funny, and "One
Breath" is a sweet SJ piece. (Links go to different places, so click on
titles.)
"Bleed
Out" by Aj (C) -- This is not a happy Scott/Jean piece,
but it explores the darker side of their relationship, and does it
well, without demonizing either one. (Bottom of
page)
"Closer"
by Penknife (M) -- A look at
sex through the eyes of a telepath, particularly the downsides and
uncertainties, and a very sweet moment with Charles at the end.
Despite the subject matter, this isn't graphic (and doesn't need to be).
The
Early Years Series by L. Burke (C)
-- Lelia has a wealth of
knowledge about comic Scott and way too many good stories to
list. The Early Years series is the Original Five that I
first read about as a kid. The scrapes they
get into are a scream, and I adore Scott's
parole officer, Carol. But just about
everything Lelia writes involves Scott. I also love
"Tables,
Tactics and Redheads," which is Jean and Scott married, and "The Line,"
"The Taint," and "Escape and Evade."
Evolutionary
Beginnings by Jen (Evo) -- An origin story for Scott
and Jean, set in the Evolution universe. As is obvious, I
don't have a lot of Evolution fic on this page because I don't read
much (the demonizing of Jean in much of it annoys the hell out of
me). This one shows a mature handling of the characters. Be
aware that it's a work in progress. There are other stories on
this page, also set in the Evolution universe, including a long novella
called Snow that is complete,
and a work in progress called Wonderwall
that features Jean and Warren.
"Fugue" by Swik (M2)
-- Scott deals with the loss of Jean, and his dreams; good treatment of
grief, and poetically written.
"The Great
Marriage Boondoggle" by Mara Greengrass (M) -- Scott and Jean
give an assignment to the older students at the mansion
-- spend a week "married" ... with unexpected results.
"Holiday
Cheer"
by Crys Wimmer (M) -- This is probably my favorite of Crys'
X-Men stories, even if it's not the most ambitious or
longest. It's just plain sweet, and when I want "comfort" S/J
fiction, I go re-read it. (Movieverse, but a very strong
comicverse tinge, too.) Incidently, and if you remember the TV
show, Lois and Clark: the New Adventures of Superman, Crys also
writes in that fandom, and I
think her best of all may be the L&C story,
"A Little Help."
"Into the Silence,
Screaming," "The One-Eyed King," "The
Spirit and the Setting Free" & "Remembrance,"
by Amanda Sichter (C) -- The first is Scott's voice
after the psi-war, thinking about Jean; companion to Sequoia's "So Much
Inside
My Head" below, whose link I've lost unfortunately. The second
is a beautiful story about a wounded Scott, the third is a Scott/Logan
friendship piece, and the last is a grieving Scott's thoughts after
Jean's death on the moon. If you miss Amanda, you've missed one
of the great comicverse Scott writers. (The first three are on a
different site, so click each title.)
la bas: song of the
drowned,
by Darkstar
(M) -- Primarily an L/R writer, much of her fiction is lovely
and
poetic, but this is my favorite of her work, and not just because it
has
Scott and Jean prominent in it. It's a post-registration story
(like
Jenn's Jus ad Bellum and Bishclone's "The Box Room") and I
confess to a certain fascination with that movieverse sub-genre.
"The Lady, the
Leader and the Bump in the Road" by nefret24 (M) -- Scott,
Jean, Logan and the working out of problems.
"Mercy" by
Kelly Siegfried (C-UX) -- I should begin with a warning, as
this is very dark and deals with rape, but deals with it respectfully
and realistically, and from the (unsual) point of view of the man being
the one forced against his will. It's Ultimate X-Men universe, set
directly after events in the "Weapon-X" story arc (issues 7-12). (Her
main fic page is here.)
"My
Girl," by
Diana (M) -- Diana normally does
Scott/Ororo fiction, which is fun, but I really like her take on Scott
and Jean in "My Girl." It's the opposite of my own "Teletubies"
story. (Link goes to main site, click on X-Men,
as she writes in several fandoms)
"Remembering
the Taste" by Sage Theory (C) -- a sweet and sexy piece
from Jean's point of view, that explores why she loves Scott and chose
him over all others. A good examination of Cyclops' strong
points, as well as why he appeals to Jean with insight the comic rarely
gave. (This site is currently offline; it promised to be
back in the spring of 2005, but that's half a year ago. I'll
leave the link up a while, just in case.)
"Spark" and "Revision" by Rae Dances (M) --
'Jean studies anatomy; Scott studies
Jean,' as her summary says of the first. It's a lovely, sweet
little story about Jean in med school and Scott assisting ... among
other things. The second
is her own version of how Scott met Jean, and fits in with her longer
series, Risen (not linked here, but easy to find on
ff.net; it's a work in progress).
"Run While you
Can" and "That Darn Cat" by Lisea (M) -- These are just two
stories on a page full of
Scott and Jean fic. Most of these stories are S/J fluff, with a
few serious ones.
"Seeing Red" &
"Shades of Red" by Kaylee (C) -- Classic Cyclops
story. Jean loses her telepathy and, emotionally devastated,
commits an indiscretion with Logan. Scott overhears. Lions,
and tigers, and bears, oh, my. This series was never
finished. Read
her other Cyke stories while you're there;
Kaylee did a lot for the popular image of Cyke in the comicverse
community.
"Triptych" by
Kerithwyn Jones (C) -- Wow. A love triangle. And
it's NOT Scott/Jean/Logan. It's Scott/Jean/WARREN, which was,
after all, the original triangle in the comics. Had to include it.
"Trust" by
Addie Logan (EVOL) -- This is a Scott/Jean story in the
Evolution universe. I read almost no Evofic because I don't watch
the cartoon, but I enjoyed this one even without seeing the episode one
which it was based.
"Without" by Seema (M2)
-- Seema is better known for her award-winning Star Trek
fanfic, but we've lured her into X-Men, and she's now produced
several Scott/Jean stories (follow link above).
The one listed, though, I particularly recommend for its
treatment of Scott's grief, post X2.

Mostly SCOTT (may
include Jean [or not], but focus on Scott)
"All
Foam, No Beer" & "My So-Caled Teaching
Career" by Troll Princess (M) --
Hysterical. Go read these. In the first, Scott's Irish
college
roommate comes to call! In the second, Scott
gets snarky. (Two separate
links; click on story title.)
"Ceremony of
Innocence" by Marvelous (M2) -- What might have happened to
Scott, at Alkali Lake. Not pretty, definitely for adults, but the
first
two chapters are well-written. If you liked Climb the Wind,
you might like this one, too. Dark with slashy overtones; if that
bugs you, don't read it..
"Clinging
Cures" by Molly (M) -- One of the few S/R romances that doesn't
bother me, because Marie isn't a child, and it's an intelligent
examination of the ways in which Scott and
Rogue are alike.
"Color
Blind" by Nadja Lee (M) -- For some reason, I always
found this particular Scott/Logan friendship story to be just very sweet.
Logan learns a few things about Scott.
"Dodge" by Dyce (C)
-- A short Scott POV piece with a surprising twist.
"Double Vision" by
Ninamonkey (M) -- Scott loses the professor and Jean, and winds
up turning to the bottle under the pressure of grief and work.
This
is a realistic excursion down the lane of alcoholism, and it has the
added plus of a tough, brooks-no-shit Ororo.
"Everything
Changes"
series by Kaly (M) -- Lovely Scott/Rogue friendship piece; you
can get to the second two
stories from links in the first.
"Fly the Passive-Agressive Skies," "The
Presence of Horses," and others by ridesandruns (M) -- The
first is a
screamingly funny snark-fest between Scott and Logan where (for once)
Scott doesn't come out on the short end; takes up the comic-canon
tidbit that Wolverine hates to fly. ;> The second is a post-X2
Scott Mourning piece that uses an unusual tack (pun intended) in
handling his healing. But really, all her work is worth reading.
"A
Glass of Water" by Tara Blue (C) -- Naked
Scott. Well, naked *sick* Scott, but still.
This had me laughing my head off.
"Halfbaked" &
"Fruitloops, Nutcases and Prophets," by Diamonde (C) -- The
first is a hysterical piece about Scott trying to catch some
rays. The second is equally funny, about Scott (ostensibly) going
off the deep end.
"Hero
Under Pressure" & "Finals," by Mara Greengrass (C-UX, M) --
Scott put to the test during Weapon X, and the second is a fun
little movieverse humor piece. Both on Mara's site.
"Living Ever After"
by Elizabeth (M) -- Mostly an R/L writer, she has great
facility with language and a grasp of character complexity;
I think I've read everything X-Men she's written, but have three
stories recommended in various categories on this page.
This one is Rogue/Scott friendship. (The link above is no
longer
working; I'm tyring to find an alternative but haven't had any luck so
far.)
"Loners" by Wyzeguy
(C-UX) -- This is a crossover between Ultimate X-Men and
Ultimate Spider-Man, and I love it, just love it. David gave me
my two favorite guys -- Scott and Peter! And much fun is had by
all.
"Monile" by Sequoia Swennes (C)
-- Scott ... and Emma. Long before Grant Morrison. And
better done, imo.
"On Letting
Go," & "After the
Fall" (C) -- This is a pair about Scott
and Cable, the first is by Jaya Mitai and the second by Cable writer
Alicia McKenzie. Beautiful look at that ever-peculiar father-son
relationship. (Click on each title as the links
go to separate places)
"Orphans," "Crimson,"
& The Sum of Zero by Dex (C) -- "Orphans" is a
classic Scott story (Scott and Jubilee talk about what it's like to be
alone in the world), "Crimson" is Dex's installment in Kaylee's "Seeing Red" series mentioned above, and the
recently finished The Sum of Zero is a wonderful murder
mystery, not to be missed by fans of that genre.
"Normal"
by Penknife (M) -- Scott
wonders what it might be like to be normal. Stories dealing with
mutants wondering about being normal are a dime a dozen in X-fic, but I
liked this one because it wasn't schmaltzy.
"Paint
it Black" by Aj (C) -- Scott/Domino, of all things, very dark,
post-Apoc, but it works.
"Phoenix
Down" by Sarah Brunker (M) -- Another amusing one; it
seems to be primarily movieverse, but with a few comic reference.
Scott Summers has a rather . . . bizarre . . . admirer. Even
X-Men can be stalked, it seems.
Prodigals
Series by Katt (M) -- Katt is better known for writing Gambit,
but she
has this loverly little series set in the movieverse that depicts Scott
and Gambit as friends, and really does justice to
both of them (as well as put paid to that silly fandom notion that
Scott and Remy have to be at each other's throats.) Remy is
really the main character, but
there's lots of Scott.
"Property" series,
& "Pure
and Simple" series by Diana (C-UX) -- "Property" and "Pure and
Simple" are Ult-X Scott and Ororo . . . a
pairing for which I'm a real sucker, I confess.
"Root
Beer Reverie" & All of Heaven Away series by Victoria P. (M)
-- Vic is nothing if not prolific; her favorite character is Rogue, and
mostly she writes R/L, but she loves Scott, too. The first is a
Scott vignette which may be among her most evocative pieces. The
second involves the whole ensemble (plus Hank), and I think that's why
I like it. Starts out focusing more on Rogue, ends up focusing
more on Scott, so I'm putting it in the Scott category. (Link goes to main page with ALL
her X-Fic, so you can try other stories -- Let me also recommend "The
Mutant Bride.")
Saving
Cain, Acts
of Contrition & "Eurydike Rising" by Domenika Marzione (C-UX, C)
-- The
first two are Ult-X novellas. Saving
Cain introduces Alex Summers and Acts of Contrition, set in the same
basic AU world (although it can be read without reading Saving first) deals with a failing
of confidence in Xavier by some of the team (namely Peter and Scott, et
al.). This is the same basic idea I wanted to explore in the Lightning Over Elk River saga, and
never quite got around to, so I'm delighted
to see an author as good as Domenika take it on and do it
justice. As always, these aren't only good stories in terms of
plot and characterization, but chock full of fun details about The Big
Apple from a native. "Eurydike Rising" is a Scott versus
Apocalypse tale. The Mirror Site,
in case the link above doesn't work (as it won't, for some).
See No Evil by Lise (AU-C) --
This is an AU involving primarily Scott, Logan, Kitty, Betsy and
Remy. I love AUs, and I love detective stories -- and this is
both, so I was tickled pink when she posted it.
"The Sun Hasn't
Risen," & "Doe, A Deer" by Jaya Mitai (C) -- Can't say too
much about this or
I'll give it away. Beautiful friendship
story, Scott/Logan/(Ororo). Scott gets a
dog, and loses someone he loves (not Jean). Hanky warning.
The second is a Scott/Logan friendship piece. Hanky warning
two. The link goes to her page at the IBCAs, so read more while
there.
"A Touch" by
Elizabeth Moon (M) -- Rogue gets fencing lessons from
Scott. Beautiful. Her main page,
which includes Roswell and Buffy fic.
"What They
Deserve" by Kata Hjärpe (M) -- Scott and Mystique work
together. "What They Deserve" is actually the sequel to "Good
Intentions," so read that first, but I want to highlight "WTD"
because it's so interesting. What would happen if Scott
was blinded permanently? Could he still lead? Read
"Cor 12" while you're there.
"The
X-Players Series" by Jocelyn, Navaeh, & Sandy (M) -- Scott
directs Shakespeare; this was just plain cute, even if it's an
English teacher Scott and I
usually think of him as a math teacher.
The best place to find all four stories
is Kielle's Movieverse archive, linked
above. (Listed under "Jocelyn.")
ICONS:
Cyclops by Vaughn/Texeira/Palmiotti -- Okay, so it's not fanfic,
but I was so tickled with this new comics short that I had to include
it. My God. He's witty, savy, smart and
Odyssean-tricky. He's . . . Scott! This is where Marvel has
hidden my Cyclops. 1, 2 & 4 are best. Pick them up at a
comics shop near you.

|
Mostly JEAN (may include Scott [or
not], but
focus on Jean)
"32
Flavors" by Victoria P. (M) -- Another one by Vic; Rogue
and Jean have a heart-to-heart; very sweet. (Link goes to main page; look for it)
"The
Box Room," & "Seventeen" by Kat Hughes
[Bishclone] (M) -- Jenn pointed me towards
Kat and I love her for it. Her stuff is
dark, but it's all
very well done. All the links above go to different places, so
please click on the title of the story. (I used to have
"November Dawn" in here as well, but it seems to ahve disappeared off
the net.)
"A Breath" by RaeDances (M) -- A
very short, startling story about Jean. Not a happy story, but I
think I like it because it caught me by surprise.
"Bump in the Night" by Aldalindil (M)
-- A very sweet Jean and Charles story as Jean tries to come to terms
with the fact that her two mentors, and adoptive fathers, are no longer
a couple. (This assumes a Charles/Erik relationship.) The story
belongs to a series of Charles/Erik stories that can be found at her
page here
(go down to the bottom).
Caligo
by Shalnyx (M) -- A crossover novel series
(ambitious!) to a film that starred Famke Jannsen (who played Jean in X-Men);
you can read it without having seen that movie. Features the
ensemble, but with
Jean as the protagonist of the first
two novels, so I'm putting it under Jean. (The link to this is
not currently working, but will leave it up a while, in case.)
"Fix" by Molly (M)
--
Post-registration AU. Jean works in a special institution for
mutants with uncontrolable powers, run by Charles Xavier. The
mutants to be found there include Scott, Rogue, and Logan.
"How Things
Change" series by Jenn (M) -- Jenn is prolific so I had a hard
time limiting myelf, and
most of her stuff features Rogue and/or Logan
but this one is Jean and Logan in a unique
way, where they get to be grown-ups, dammit.
It's my second-favorite of her stories, after Jus
ad Bellum (see below in 'others') (The
link goes to her main page, scroll down for series.)
"Jean's
Little Problem" "1968," "A Quick Bite," & "Room 102" by Benway (C
&
C-UX) -- The doc always makes you think. B.'s stuff is
often absolutely adult, but never pointless graphic
deadwood. He tackles those things others won't. The first
is Jean's hard choice before Roe vs Wade, the second is the
quasi-prequel (written after the first), the third is a bloated
Jean who finds Scott in a compromising situation, and the last is Ult-X
Jean . . . listening.
Phoenix Rising by Musemea (M) --
Jean's final thoughts before the wave overtook her in X2, with the
lovely comic history rising wings in the background. I'm a sucker
for stories that look at Phoenix in movieverse.
"The Price of
Love" &
"Remember Me" by Khaki (M) -- Jean gets to be a doctor.
Wow. Imagine that. (Too much fanfic -- including some of my
own -- tends to forget that side of Jean.) Plus, I was just laid
out flat, laughing at the 'confrontation' between Jean and Scott over
Logan. Khaki lets Jean say the obvious and sensible things, and
knock the jealous wind out of Scott's sails. :-) The second is a
sweet
piece, in which Jean must solve the mystery of a girl only she can see
-- but who's following Logan around.
"When
a Man Loves a Woman" and "Torn," by Sequoia
(C) -- "When a Man..." explores the
relationship of Jean and Scott. (I've not been able to
locate a working link to "So Much Inside My Head" so finally removed
it.)
"The Ticket" by
Domenika
Marzione (C) -- A classic (if sad) J/S piece, set after Scott's
presumed self-sacrifice to save Nate and stop Apocalypse.
When
Push Comes
to Shove by Lachlanrose (M) -- A very different take on
Jean than mine, and it's J/L (though with hints that it may turn out to
be S/J at the end; it's incomplete at present). Yet this is a
very interesting story, with complex characterization. It is
quite thoroughly adult, though, and neither Logan nor Jean are
particularly nice. I should add, her website appears to
have disappeared so the link now goes to an archive, page down to her
name.
|
|
SCOTT Slashed (mostly S/L, some other)
"All of the
Animals" by Jane St. Clair (alone) (M) -- Scott/Jean/Logan; veeery
interesting.
"The
Answer is Yes" by
Nix (M) -- Scott in the future, musing on appropriate times
with the only one still living, Logan.
After
the Fall
Series by Mo (M) -- Originally, I had Mo's X1 ("Anything Can
Happen") series here, but her newer X2 series is probably the better
written, so I'm switching them out. The link goes to her main
page, where you can find all her work. The most recent entries in
the X2 series aren't up on her page yet, but can be found on her LJ HERE.
"I Close My Eyes" by
Tangerine (C) -- After searching for this for a long time, I
finally have a link to one of the few Scott/Warren pieces out there,
and the first I ever read with that pairing. It's Scott after
Jean died on the Moon in the Dark Phoenix Saga, and Warren, helping him
to cope. Excellent work.
"Naked,"
"A
Dangerous Man," and "Things
Have Changed" by Jane St. Clair and Te (C C-UX, M) -- The first
is a beautifully evocative Scott/Warren piece, the second is set in the
Ultimate universe with a pairing you don't expect, and the third is
possibly the only techer/student story I'll ever recommend ... because
it's not presented a as acceptable. (Each
title above is a separate link.)
"Odi et amo"
by Kata Hjärpe (M) -- Kata does S/L, although it's more
UST than consumation.
"Penumbra"
by
Elizabeth (M) -- An S/L piece which is all about personal
deceptions; very insightful.
"Pissing
Contest" by
Kate Bolin (M) -- Another Scott/Logan piece, heavy UST.
It's very short but asks THE question: just whom does
Scott really want Logan to stay away from?
"Ultimate..."
series by Paxnirvana (C-UX) -- Scott and Warren, in the
Ultimate universe. If you're not into slash, don't read it, but I
like
what she does with the Scott/Warren dynamic. And hey, Pax is one
of the few writers who
can make me like Gambit, so . . . . I almost forgot, Pax
also did the "Shades
of Red" series which I liked a lot (main comic); Rogue and Scott
have a little accident. Wonderful treatment of both characters (not
an R/S romance).
|
XAVIER & ORORO (I had so many for these
two in my
'other' category, I thought they deserve their own!)
"10,000
Candles," "Fishing Trip," "Golden," "Hurricane Eye," & "New Shoes,"
by Andraste (M/2, C) -- Andraste has Charles Xavier nailed
down. If you want good Xavier, in comicverse or movieverse, visit
Andraste's site. The ones listed above are just some of my
favorites. ("10,000
Candles" is X2, and goes to a different link.)
"His
Mother's Eyes"
by Artaxastra (M) -- Primarily about Kurt, with Xavier,
Erik,
Mystique and Ororo playing a role. At the current time, the
only place it appears to be archived is in her journal, in two separate
entries. If it's archived as a whole later anywhere, I'll update.
His
Terrible Swift Sword by Yahtzee (M) -- Awesome lengthy
story featuring Charles and Erik, post X2 but with lots of material
about them as young men. A must-read for all fans of either
character,
but definitely adult.
"Moving Furniture"
and "Freefall" by Penknife (M) -- The first is a cute story
about, as the title suggests, moving furniture, but also about
characterization. "Freefall" is a rewrite of X2, with a smarter
Xavier and Scott. These are Xavier/Magneto and Scott/Jean.
She also just has a lovely series of various alternatives for how
Ororo arrived at the mansion; all are plausible and insightful. I
love such "what if" prequel stories.
She
Walks in Beauty by Libby Edwards (M,
C) -- Ostensibly Logan/Ororo romance that's
really an adventure story. For more of her work, see also
her shorts
and erotica
pages.
"Silver
Lining" & "Face Into
the Wind," & "Let it
Rain" by Minarya (M)
-- The first two are a pair in a series. "Silver Lining" is set
on the occasion
of Jean and Scott's wedding (though they're featured only as
background), is an Ororo piece with a bit of Logan spice, and an
appearance by Forge. "Face" (much longer) has some action and we
get to see (yea!) an effective Storm in battle. The last is a
short Storm/Wolverine mood piece.
"Tears for the Child" and
Fractured Prism by Ninamonkey (C)
-- The first is a beautiful Ororo/Logan story that deals with a
terrible subject (child abuse) - read the warnings. The
second is a wonderful thriller involving Ororo's past, and Remy Lebeau.
"Time Heals All" by Nyarth (M2)
-- Xavier's diary entries post X2,
on coping with loss.
WMD, "Possession,"
& "Nameless"
by C. Elisa (M-pre) -- The first is a Xavier/Magneto story that
she
describes as "Five things that probably didn't happen while Charles and
Erik were building Cerebro" ... which just about covers it, although
this isn't humor.
It's very insightful about both men -- particularly part 5.
The second story is one of the best treatments I've ever read, dealing
with Ororo's possible religious beliefs (Yoruba), and the third story
concerns a young mutant with very ... interesting powers.
|
OTHERS (Scott and/or Jean
probably
appear, but not as protags)
"Agony
and Ecstacy," "Torn," &
"Living in Stereotypes" by
Diebin (M) -- Diebin hasn't written much X-Men fic
lately, and most of her stuff is R/L. I could recommend several
stories, but she's recommended all over the place, so I'll stick to
three pieces. Scott shines in the first, but beware, as it's VERY
dark, the second is also dark and the third deals quite well with date
rape -- a tricky topic all too often handled badly in fanfic.
"Blues"
& "Homecoming"
by Jane St. Clair and Te
(C) -- Bobby and Hank slashed; the first old Hank, and the
second is Hank in his newest (cat) mutation.
"Details"
by Morgan (M) -- This is really an ensemble piece, not an S/J
piece, but there is definite
S/J in it. I read this a long time
ago, and then couldn't remember where. Recently refound
it. Lovely look at life in the mansion and, as the title
suggests, the small details that are acts of kindess.
"The
Evolution of Jubilee" by
Mara Greengrass (M) -- Probably (imo) Mara's best story,
featuring Jubilee and museums (of all things)
The
Godless Sequence by Dyce (M) -- I love Dyce's Annie, and I love
Scott trying to deal with Annie. This is a unique original
character, the genetically engineered daughter
of Sabretooth and Mystique, and she's a WILD ride.
Help
is Bright Green by Sasha (M) -- The X-men are
secondary/tertiary here, and when they do appear, the focus is on
students, not adults. The real focus is an original character
named Alex who is, you guessed it, green. He also happens to be
gay. But best of all, he's
absolutely hysterical, and so are his friends. This is the kind
of writing and quirky
characters which makes good literary mainstream.
Jane St.
Clair's Imaging the X-Men (C) -- This used to be
on my
links page, it was so unusual, but really, it belongs here. It's
a coffee table book of photographs and brief interviews with various
members of the X-Men, X-Force, Alpha Flight, and Generation X. Be
aware that the pictures are professional nude photography. Jane
says: "It's my firm belief that none of these pictures qualify as
'dirty.' They're the work of an array of professional
photographers . . . But most of them feature nude adults, and in a few
cases the nudity is full-frontal." If that doesn't bother you, I highly
recommend taking a look. The commentary and interviews give the
instant feel of reality. It 'reads' exactly like what it's
supposed to be: a photographic journal.
Jus
ad Bellum, Love and
Lust at Mutant High, &
Illusions by Jenn
(M) -- The first is an absolute MUST
read movieverse novel. "Our" Rogue (older and a little more
mature) is thrown into an alternate universe where Mutant Registration
happened ... with horrible results. How
does Rogue deal with this Logan, Jean and Scott? Mutant High
is a sometimes poignant, sometimes hysterical walk on the wild side
with St. John Allerdyce. And Illusions is a very dark
Rogue piece. (Each of the links goes to a
subpage so click on each TITLE.)
"Little
Things" by Elizabeth (M) -- An ensemble piece.
Michael
Chabon's rejected X-Men treatment -- Yes, folks that
Michael Chabon, Pulitzer Winner and PEN/Faulkner Finalist, author of The
Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay, was asked to submit a
script proposal for X-Men: The Movie. It wasn't,
obviously, accepted. But here it is where you can read it, his
cover letter first and the proposal following. Was Singer right
to turn him down, or wrong? YOU be the judge!
"Night
of the Dead Living" by Victoria P. -- Hysterical take-off on a
Homicide episode (of the same title).
"Rubber
Ducky" by Paradoqz and JBMcDragon (C) -- I can't remember when
was the last time I laughed so hard. Bobby, Rogue's underpants, a
Rubber Rogue and a Hank who doth protest too much. God, this is
hysterical. Link now goes to JB's main X-fic page, so also check
out her Growing Up a Superhero series.
"Sepia"
by Princess Twilite (M2) -- Logan realizes his age.
Shadow
Over Westchester by Kerrie Smith (C)
-- And if you're into dark, try this novella in
the style of H.P Lovecraft, a Halloween fic without being holiday
fic.
Features the first five.
Shi'ar Coffee Story by Alicia McKenzie (C)
-- I thought this story was already on this list, only to find (to my
shock) that it wasn't. It is simply the funniest sillific story
I've ever read about Cable (Nathan Summers, Scott's son), and written
by the fanfic author who probably knows Cable best of all.
"Snow
People" by Lokis Rose (C) -- A little twist on Bobby.
"Still
Life," "Priam's Lament," Future Pluperfect, "Three
Princes," and "Dasyatidae," by Dominika Marzione (M2, C & C-UX)
-- After Scott's 'death,' Chris Summers faces down Xavier. FP
is a humongous epic novel that sorta/kinda centers around Cable (Nathan
Summers),
the third is a beautiful eulogy for Colossus (Peter Rasputin), and the
last
is Ult-X Peter as he should be written. The Mirror Site,
in case the link above doesn't work (as it won't, for some).
A
Summer of Wendy by DarkMark (other) -- It's not even X-Men,
but you may like this little mystery. And when you get to the
end and find out who Wendy is, you'll laugh.
X-Manson
and White Ford Escort by D
Benway (C-AU) -- Another two from Benway ... What if things
weren't what they seemed, Xavier more sinister, and the X-Men a
cult? What makes this way beyond the
usual 'dark' AU is the cleverness of it,
the knowledge that underlies it (of cults and politics), and a very
black humor about the comics. But that said, this story will NOT
be for everyone. Read it with caution. White Ford Escort is a Kitty/Pete
Wisdom story, tracking a serial killer. Benway does GREAT Kitty.
